It could be larger animals now and then. Raccoons and even Opossums have found there way into homes before. We have found these animals many times by surprise during an inspection. And the damage they can do can be very little to very bad. You should also look up Raccoon feces on the CDC website and read up on what people can catch from them. If you open up your attic space and find very large feces be aware of a larger animal being present in the attic. A Opossum will run from you and may make hissing sounds if provoked but will not charge at you or hurt you. However a Raccoon can be not a pleasant animal to run up on by surprise. If they see you they will make all attempts to get away from you. But if babies are present and they feel a threat by your presence they will react differently without fear. And can show teeth and even charge at you many times a bluff to run you away from the nest. In a confined space like an attic where you have to walk on ceiling joist and perform a balancing act when they charge at you it is hard to get away in a quick manner.
